Pre-conceptual design and dimensioning
Basic infrastructure
Features of the basic infrastructure are:
- Oval-shaped ring dyke, with its crest at +11m LATOval-shaped ring dyke, with its crest at +11m LAT
- Footprint on the seabed: Area of 9 km2; Long axis: approx. 4 km; Short axis: approx. 2.5 km
- 550 MW of pump turbine capacity (i.e. 11 units of 50 MW each, + 1 spare), that can empty the reservoir through pumping and generate electricity when filling up the reservoir
- Reservoir: Bottom at -34m LAT; Lowest water level at -30m LAT; Highest water level at -10m LAT
Added infrastructure of the Pumped Hydro Storage
In order to execute this activity, no additional infrastructure is needed as the basic infrastructure is sufficient. In order to execute this activity, no additional infrastructure is needed as the basic infrastructure is sufficient.Features of the basic infrastructure related to the Pumped Hydro Storage function are:
- Energy storage capacity of the reservoir is approx. 2,200 MWh (but this can easily be redesigned into the >10 GWh range)
- Installed electrical power of 550 MW, in pump and turbine mode
Added infrastructure for Marine Aquaculture
The added infrastructure for the Marine Aquaculture activity is (see figure above):
- Blue zone (Oysters and lobsters): subtidal floating bags in reservoir, vessels for harvesting, …Blue zone (Oysters and lobsters): subtidal floating bags in reservoir, vessels for harvesting,
- Orange zone (Oysters): intertidal longline system in reservoir, vessels for harvesting,
- Green zone (Sea vegetables): harvesting equipment,
- Pink zone (Bouchot mussels): poles for Bouchot mussel culture,
Added infrastructure for the 100 MW Near Shore Wind Farm is:
- Wind turbines
- Balance of Electrical Plant (cables, transformers, …)
